Ilocano Numbers and How They Are Built
Native Ilocano numerals with their Tagalog equivalents, the rule for building numbers above ten, and when Ilocano speakers use Spanish numbers instead.

Two counting systems in daily use
Ilocano has native numerals and Spanish-derived ones, and speakers use both. The native set is what you will meet in traditional counting and in set phrases. The Spanish set — uno, dos, tres, kuatro, singko, sais, siete, otso, nuebe, dies — is common for prices, telling the time, and anything to do with money.
Tagalog does exactly the same thing, borrowing the same Spanish numbers for the same situations. So a market conversation may well use Spanish numbers in both languages while the native ones sit unused.

Three numbers that need no translation
Five, seven and eight are identical in Ilocano and Tagalog — lima, pito, walo. These are not borrowings from one into the other; they descend from a shared Austronesian ancestor. Lima for five turns up in related forms across the Austronesian family, from the Philippines to Indonesia and into the Pacific.
This has a practical consequence for machine translation. If you translate lima and get lima back, nothing went wrong — it really is the same word. But unchanged output is also the signature of a failed translation, so the two cases are easy to confuse. Our accuracy measurement found the engine scored 59% on numbers, one of its weaker categories, partly for this reason.
How tens are built
The Ilocano system is transparent once you see it. Ten is sangapuló — literally “one group of ten”, from sanga- (one) plus puló (ten). Higher tens replace the multiplier: twenty is duápuló (two tens), fifty is limápuló (five tens).
Numbers in between are joined with ket, meaning “and”. Eleven is sangapuló ket maysá — ten and one.
Tagalog does not work this way. It uses a dedicated prefix, labing-, giving labing-isa for eleven, and has its own forms for the tens. Below ten the two systems look related; above ten they part company completely.
We have deliberately not published a full one-to-a-hundred list. We can source the rule and the specific forms above, but not every intermediate number in a way we could stand behind — and a number list that is quietly wrong in places is worse than no list. Where the two systems diverge
Below ten, Ilocano and Tagalog are visibly related. Three numbers are identical, and several others are recognisable cousins — tallo against tatlo, uppat against apat, innem against anim, siam against siyam.
Above ten they stop resembling each other entirely, because the two languages chose different strategies for building compound numbers.

The Ilocano pattern is compositional: a multiplier, then puló for the tens, then ket (“and”) plus the remainder. Once you know ket, you can decompose any Ilocano number you meet even if you have never seen it before.
Tagalog instead has a dedicated teens prefix, labing-, and fuses its tens into single words. The systems are not variations on one theme; they are different designs.
How badly the machine handles numbers
Numbers look like the easiest thing in any language — a closed set, unambiguous, no register or politeness to get wrong. Our audit scored them at 59%, below the site average.

Maysareturning as “A” is the English pivot in plain view: one became the English article, and the article was carried across as a letter. Sangagasut becoming Daan is worse — a hundred turns into a road, because Tagalog daan means both.
The lesson is not that numbers are hard, but that isolated words are. Put the same number in a sentence and the surrounding context usually rescues it.
Counting in practice
Asking a price is Manu? in Ilocano — Magkano? in Tagalog. The answer will very often come back in Spanish numerals regardless of which language the rest of the sentence is in.
Worth knowing: our translator returns Manu? unchanged when translating into Tagalog, which is one of the ten silent failures documented on the accuracy page. It is a common enough word that the gap is surprising.
When Spanish numbers take over
Knowing the native numerals is not the same as knowing which numerals people actually use. In much of daily life — money above all — the Spanish set does the work in both languages.

The rough division of labour: Spanish numerals for prices, clock times and amounts of money; native numerals for counting objects, ages, and anything in a traditional or literary register. Tagalog splits the work the same way, which means a market exchange can be conducted in Spanish numbers by two people speaking different Philippine languages.
Do not treat the boundary as a rule. Speakers mix freely, and the same person may use sangapuló and dies minutes apart depending on what is being counted.
Numbers you will need in a market
Numbers alone are rarely enough. These are the phrases they appear inside, taken from our checked phrasebook:

One usage note worth having: Ilocano tawar and Tagalog tawad are the same word, showing the d/r correspondence that runs between the two languages. Haggling is expected in public markets and not in shops, in both language areas.
Ilocano also builds comparison by reduplicating the root rather than adding a separate word — ad-adu for “more” against Tagalog mas marami, basbassit for “smaller” against mas maliit. If a number word looks like it has been stuttered, that is usually a comparative rather than a typo.
Asking 'how many' and 'how much'
Ilocano uses the same root for both questions where English splits them. Manu? asks how much something costs; Sagmamano? is the fuller form, and both are built on the same stem. Tagalog splits the job: Magkano? for price, Ilan? for quantity.
That mismatch is one reason number questions translate poorly. An Ilocano Manu? can legitimately become either Tagalog word depending on context, and with a single word as input there is no context to decide from — which is exactly the situation where our audit found the engine returning Manu? unchanged rather than choosing.
Counting quantities of things also brings in the plural. Ilocano marks plurals by doubling a consonant — babai to babbai — where Tagalog puts mgain front of an unchanged noun. So “three women” changes the shape of the noun in one language and adds a separate word in the other, and the engine handles neither reliably.
In practice a number word usually makes the plural marking redundant, and speakers of both languages often drop it once the quantity is explicit. If you are learning, getting the number right matters considerably more than getting the plural right.
