Editorial policy

Linguistic claims — a phrase translation, a grammar statement, a speaker count — are either tied to a published source we link to, or explicitly marked as unconfirmed. There is no third category.

Population figures come from the 2020 Philippine Statistics Authority census. We use that in preference to round numbers circulating on other translation sites, some of which overstate Ilocano speakers several times over.

11 of 158 phrasebook entries carry a pending review label. These rest on general reference rather than a citation we can link. They are still shown, because withholding a probably-correct everyday word helps nobody, but they are labelled so you can weigh them accordingly.

The label comes off when a source is found or a native speaker confirms the entry — not when it has been up for a while.

No native Ilocano speaker has yet reviewed the phrase data. We are not going to imply otherwise, and this page will name the reviewer when that changes.

1. Your suggestion is recorded with the entry it refers to. Nothing changes on the site at that moment — corrections are never published automatically.
2. We check it against the sources we already cite, and look for a further source if it contradicts them.
3. If it holds up, the entry is updated and its note explains the change where the difference is not obvious.
4. If a suggestion reflects a regional variant rather than an error, we usually add it as a variant note instead of replacing the existing form.

• Present machine-generated translations as human-checked. The phrasebook and the translator output are kept visibly separate.
• Invent a reviewer or credentials. The site is written by a named person with no linguistics qualifications, and says so; when a native speaker reviews the data they will be named here too.
• Publish a page for a language pair we have nothing specific to say about. Those pages exist so the tool works, and are marked noindex.
• Quietly change the accuracy figure. It is generated by a script from raw results in the repository, and the method is on the methodology page.

• Entries marked pending review, particularly kinship and feeling words.
• Regional Ilocano forms — Cagayan Valley, Abra, Kalinga and Apayao are thinly covered.
• Spelling conventions, where Ilocano practice is not standardised.
• Register: anywhere we have marked something formal that is not, or vice versa.
